The teaching of VCOP is one of the key strands of Big Writing.
VCOP is focused teaching of the following:
Vocabulary = teach a wide range of ‘wow’ words, (ambitious vocabulary);
Connectives = teach a wide range of words and phrases for connecting thoughts, ideas, sentences etcetera;
Openers = teach a wide range of ways of opening sentences, including sequence words, linking words and phrases and the 3 power openers;
Punctuation = teach a wide range of punctuation.
Expect children to attempt to use their new knowledge and encourage them as they pass through the emergent phase. Rather than let them know they haven’t got it quite right, praise but continue to model how to use the features accurately.
The imaginary friend is an excellent strategy for modeling raised achievement and higher levels without damaging pupils’ self-belief and self-esteem.
